DISTRIBUTION OF MOTORCYCLES IN SUPPORT OF EXTENSION AGENTS’ MOBILITY OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA Wed, Feb 19, 2014 Today marks another major milestone in the drive of President Goodluck Jonathan to transform the agriculture sector. The agriculture sector in Nigeria is witnessing significant changes. We have ended the era of agriculture as a development program, and shifted to agriculture as a business. And the approach is working. Our Growth Enhancement Scheme is working and impacting the lives of millions of farmers. Within two years, the growth enhancement scheme reached 6 million genuine farmers and this has improved the food security of 30 million persons in rural farm households. The impact on food production has been significant as well, as our farmers produced an additional 15 million metric tons of food within two years. I abandoned Masters Degree programme for farming –Adewole Mon, Feb 10, 2014 By Onche Odeh At  a time friends are still busy designing attractive curriculum vitae in readiness for available job openings, 29-year-old Temitope Adewole moved on. The graduate of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology from the University of Ibadan (UI) is fast becoming the envy of friends and colleagues, particularly those in the banking industry. Within one year of planting five hectares of cassava, which he intercropped with corn and watermelon, Adewole has raised money to rent a two-bedroom apartment in a housing estate in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, bought a fairly-used  Mercedes Benz 190  car for mobility, just as he was able to help his younger undergraduate sister offset her tuition. This is the sweet side of a tough decision he made earlier. One of such was leaving Lagos, where he was born and bred. “I grew up in Lagos State where I was born. I attended my p...

2013 Harvest: Surplus Food In Imo State Mon, Nov 18, 2013

2013 Harvest: Surplus Food In Imo State Mon, Nov 18, 2013 In the South-east, particularly in Imo State, the people are predominantly farmers. The pattern of agricultural production in the state vary from one area to the other as areas like Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Oru West, Oru East and Owerri local government areas among others that are oil producing areas, have different pattern of agricultural production compared to non oil producing areas of the state like Okigwe for topographical reasons. Generally, 2013 wet season harvest has been very good in the state especially the high yield recorded on the three major crops that are commonly produced in the state which include cassava, yam and plantain. Evidence of good harvest could be seen in the large quantities of these crops in the market. A visit to all the markets in the state will certainly prove that there is abundant food and cash crops in the state. At Eke Umuagwo and Afor Umuapu markets in Ohaji/Egbema local government area...
