 How to care for dry, sensitive skinNormal soaps can dry the skin, be sure to use a moisturising soap. Wash your face with mild baby soap.
• Limit your exposure to things that usually irritate your skin.
• Wear gloves to protect your skin, especially when washing dishes or cleaning the house.
• f you wear plastic or rubber gloves, be sure to take breaks to wipe the sweat away from your hands as it too can irritate them.
• Keep your showers or baths short and use only lukewarm water, followed immediately with a moisturiser that locks in the moisture.
• Use a moisturiser designed specifically for sensitive skin.
• Never use any make-up or perfume without first trying a little of it on the inside of your wrist to see the reaction of your skin to it, for very few items of make-up agree with a sensitive skin.
• Don’t scratch or rub your skin. This not only irritates it, it can also break the surface of the skin, enabling irritants or bacteria to become trapped, resulting in further irritation.
Stop smoking, this dries and irritates your skin.
• Don’t get too stressed, as this also further irritates your sensitive skin.
• Don’t forget to wear sunscreen.
• Make sure the make-up you use is hypo-allergenic, and remove it thoroughly at night. First use a soothing eye make-up remover. Apply with a cotton wool ball, then remove every last trace with a clean cotton bud.
• It is advisable not to use facial washes and soaps, as these are likely to strip your skin of oil and moisture, which can increase its sensitivity even more. So, instead, choose a light, hypo-allergenic cleansing lotion.
• Even mild skin fresheners can break down the natural protection your delicate skin needs against the elements. So, freshen it by splashing with warm water instead. This also removes the final traces of cleanser and eye make-up remover from your skin.
